York VX Club won the VX Knockout Tournament for an unprecedented fourth time running - but they encountered some tough opposition on the way.
In the semi-finals they faced old adversaries Easi-RockIts who have been going through a re-building process but were now feeling more confident as the new players were settling into senior competition.
The first period saw a tense battle as both teams tore into each other at a fast pace.Easi took heart from the fact they were a mere 10 points adrift at 66:56 and redoubled their efforts in the second period, focussing on captain Scott Snowdon and winning the period to reduce the deficit to 6 points. Stung by the fightback York upped the pace after half-time, not letting Easi settle and building up a lead of 26 points to give themselves some breathing space. Easi, however, are a club with a never-say-die attitude and fought right to the end of the final quarter, again targetting the York captain and pressuring non-stop, and again winning the quarter but it wasn't enough to overturn the lead as York took the match by 12 points to win 279:267.
In the final York were to face Scunthorpe Hawks who were fielding a strong team. With the title at stake the first period proved to be a cagey affair as the teams probed each other's defences but it was York who went into the first break with a slender 5-point lead, 35:30. Building on this York increased the pace and the pressure in the second half.Although Scunthorpe tried hard to maintain their structure, the non-stop pressure from York saw them win the period by 10 points to go in at half-time leading 80:65. The third period saw more of the same as York moved up a gear and simply overwhelmed their opponents to more than double their lead to 150:117. Although Scunthorpe fought back hard in the final period they could only draw the quarter and York took the match and the title 196:163.
York Captain Scott Snowdon said: "We are very proud to have won this title for the fourth year running. We've also won the Regional League and are now looking forward to the National Finals next month. We're taking nothing for granted - Easi-RockIts pushed us really hard here today so we know what they are capable of!"
